Papilledema is swelling of the optic disc caused by raised pressure inside the skull, often from conditions such as idiopathic intracranial hypertension or brain tumors. If the underlying pressure is not treated in time, it can progress to permanent optic atrophy. Specialized neurology and neurosurgery services to manage raised intracranial pressure are limited across Zambia, and some patients are left with residual optic nerve damage even after the underlying cause is treated.
