Optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH) is a congenital condition in which the optic nerve does not fully develop before birth, causing reduced vision from early childhood. It can occur alone or alongside other conditions such as septo-optic dysplasia. Pediatric neuro-ophthalmology services for congenital optic nerve conditions are limited across Nigeria, leading some families to seek evaluation and treatment options abroad.
Because optic nerve hypoplasia is present from birth, early evaluation matters, but pediatric neuro-ophthalmology and endocrinology services (needed to screen for associated hormonal conditions in septo-optic dysplasia) are concentrated in very few centers, largely outside Nigeria. Families often travel abroad for both a comprehensive diagnostic work-up and to explore regenerative treatment options.

Stem cell therapy is studied for its potential to support underdeveloped optic nerve tissue and help make use of remaining visual pathways. Results vary significantly by case, and our team sets realistic expectations after reviewing a child’s full diagnostic picture, including any associated hormonal or brain-structure findings.
Suitability depends on the stage and cause of the condition. Before travelling, our team reviews:

I am very satisfied with the services at Stem Cell Cure. The team is very professional and knowledgeable. They provided good guidance and ensured every step of the process was smooth and comfortable

Stem Cell Cure India made me believe in the treatment right from the first consultation. The doctors went through the therapy in depth and the staff was always there to help.
“Yes, ONH is most often diagnosed in infancy. Our pediatric evaluation reviews imaging and hormonal test results before advising on suitability.”
“Not always, but it can be associated with septo-optic dysplasia, which may involve pituitary hormone deficiencies. We recommend an MRI and hormonal screening as part of the work-up.”
“OCT scan, MRI of the brain and pituitary if available, and any hormonal test results, along with a description of the child’s vision and developmental history.”
“Stem cell therapy is a regenerative approach being explored to support optic nerve health. Suitability and outcomes vary by individual case and are assessed after medical evaluation.”
