Ischemic Optic Neuropathy — Evaluation in Mexico**
Ischemic optic neuropathy occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is interrupted, causing sudden vision loss — often on waking. It has two main forms: arteritic (linked to giant cell arteritis, a medical emergency) and non-arteritic (linked to cardiovascular risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea).
Patients typically travel after the acute phase, wanting a specialist opinion on residual vision, confirmation of the type (arteritic vs. non-arteritic), and — importantly — a full cardiovascular risk-factor review to reduce the chance of it happening again, including in the other eye.

If arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (giant cell arteritis) is suspected and untreated, this is a same-day emergency requiring immediate local care to protect the other eye — we would not recommend delaying treatment to travel. For confirmed non-arteritic cases past the acute stage, our evaluation focuses on current nerve status, cardiovascular risk review, and prevention planning; there is no proven treatment that reverses vision already lost to this condition.
Suitability depends on the stage and cause of the condition. Before travelling, our team reviews:

Excellent customer service and straight away got some improvement as my eye points stop hurting when i press them so and still on the healing process. Very experienced doctor and lovely people. Happy with it.

I came from overseas specifically for treatment. The staff not only assisted me with transport but also made the whole experience hassle-free. The medical service was of the highest standard and I was very secure in Delhi.
“It’s helpful if available, but not mandatory — our team can review based on clinical history and OCT/visual field findings.”
” That is a decision for you and a genetic counsellor, since LHON is inherited. Our evaluation focuses on the affected individual’s optic nerve.”
“At present, India’s visa suspension for Mexico nationals means direct travel is not possible. We recommend starting with a remote report review so you’re ready to proceed as soon as the situation changes.”
