Papilledema-related optic atrophy is the permanent loss of nerve function that follows prolonged, unresolved swelling of the optic disc. While papilledema itself is an acute response to increased pressure within the skull, this condition represents the end-stage scarring and death of nerve fibres that follows if that pressure is not relieved in time. Preventing this transition is the primary goal of neuro-ophthalmological care, since once optic atrophy develops, the resulting vision loss is largely permanent.

Causes
Raised intracranial pressure is the underlying cause, whether from idiopathic intracranial hypertension, a brain tumor, blocked cerebrospinal fluid drainage, or other causes affecting pressure inside the skull.
Symptoms
Headache, especially worse when lying down, along with brief episodes of visual blurring or blackouts (lasting seconds), are common early symptoms. If pressure remains elevated, progressive and permanent vision loss can follow.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves fundus examination showing disc swelling, MRI or CT imaging of the brain to identify the cause of raised pressure, and sometimes a lumbar puncture to measure opening pressure directly.
Treatment — Stem Cell Therapy
The underlying cause of raised intracranial pressure must be treated by a neurologist or neurosurgeon first. Once intracranial pressure is controlled, stem cell therapy is studied for its potential to support optic nerve tissue already damaged by prolonged papilledema.
