Glaucoma optic atrophy represents the end-stage degeneration of the optic nerve resulting from untreated or inadequately managed glaucoma. As intraocular pressure rises, it places mechanical stress on the nerve fibres, leading to a process known as ‘cupping’, where the optic disc loses its healthy structure. Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, making early stabilisation of eye pressure essential to slowing nerve damage.

Causes
Elevated intraocular pressure, from impaired drainage of fluid within the eye, gradually damages the optic nerve fibers. Risk factors include age, family history, high myopia, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes.
Symptoms
Glaucoma often has no symptoms in its early stages. As it progresses, patients may notice peripheral (side) vision loss, which can go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred, followed by central vision loss in advanced cases.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis includes tonometry (measuring eye pressure), OCT imaging of the optic nerve, visual field testing to detect characteristic patterns of vision loss, and examination of the optic disc for cupping.
Treatment — Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cell therapy is studied for its potential to support optic nerve tissue already damaged by glaucoma, once intraocular pressure is under control. It does not lower eye pressure and does not replace glaucoma medication, laser treatment, or surgery.

How Stem Cell Therapy May Help
